The art of staying dedicated to your goals

There are two main challenges to achieve anything you want in life. The first one is to set the right goals for yourself. Second and equally important is to learn how to stay dedicated and committed to your goals. Literally anyone can set any goals they want but what happens when there is some kind of adversity. What happens when there is no growth for some time? or if there is a family issue holding you back?

To remain dedicated even in the hard times can be challenging, but with the right strategies in place, you can tackle every hurdle that comes in your way. It is better to stay focussed on small and measurable steps to help you stay on the right track:

Have a positive monologue

We constantly surround ourselves with negative thoughts. Thoughts like “I don’t think I will be able to get through” and “I will not be able to get back on the track”. The kind of thoughts that run through your head determine your actions. It is scientifically proven that positive monologues to yourself can increase your happiness. Even though it does not change your environment as such. Therefore, replace your thoughts with the positive ones. Thoughts like “I know and I will do better next time”.

Find the source of your challenge

Identifying the source of problem/ challenge and taking action to resolve the challenge is the best thing you can do. Although, it is easier said than done. For example, if you are finding it hard to work on your academic goal because of your hectic work schedule. Consider reducing the hours you put in or delegating work to someone else.

Have an associated side hustle

If you are finding it difficult to work on your goal or you’re tired, try having an adjacent goal. For example, your goal is to finish writing a novel. You can work on the character sheet, work on the storyboard, or anything which is not central to your goal instead. These side goals are less stressful and more manageable. It also makes you feel as if you have taken a break from your main focus. However, you are still making progress and working in the direction that matters.

Work in small time frames

Many times we feel overwhelmed with the long term goals that we have. It is suggested to have goals broken down into smaller time intervals. For example, if your goal is to get a master’s degree, focus on attending all the lectures and submitting assignments on time. Instead of one goal spread across 2 years with no defined actionable steps. It will help you start working towards your goal and start the momentum which will help you in pursuit of your main goals.

Try and eliminate bad habits

All the bad habits big or small steal your focus and energy and keep you from staying focused. It does not have to be directly related to your goal, the aim should be to eliminate bad habits and do something positive about yourself. If you can cut a bad habit like binge-watching all the time or even biting your nails, you will feel incredible about it.

Always know why you started

Loss of motivation is a common reason why people fail to achieve what they want. Just remember why you set this goal in the first place? Try to find your former self. It can help you regain your motivation and set you on your journey to success.

Take support from others

Taking support from your loved ones and friends is highly linked with goal achievement. It can help in multiple ways. Your friends can help you stay accountable for whatever goals you have. Also, social support helps you resolve difficult circumstances by standing just by your side through tough times.

Even if you are in no need for any sort of help, general support can motivate you, It also improves your mental as well physical well being.

Have an eye your goals always

Having an eye on the goal, doesn’t just motivate you to stay focused, it also dissuades you from indulging in counterproductive activities.it reminds you of your goals on a regular basis. Therefore, it is advised you to write your goals on a card and put it at a place where you can see it regularly.
